Men in the Mines

A History of Mining Activity in Nova Scotia, 1720-1992

Letter of Recommendation for Thomas Neville

1 July 1841, Albion Mines. Henry Poole, Agent (manager) for the General Mining Association, certifies that Neville was a good worker, employed as an engineer or fitter for many years, but "his services are no longer required." Men like Neville offered specialized skills not yet found in Nova Scotia in the early days of coal-mining. Frequently they were offered inducements to immigrate from Great Britain, and if their skills were no longer needed in a specific mine operation, they easily found work elsewhere.
