HALIFAX DISASTER RECORD OFFICE
CHRONICLE BUILDING
HALIFAX, N. S.

From His Grace the Archbishop.

The late disaster has been no respecter of persons or places, and in common with our brethren of all communions we have suffered seriously. It has at least greatly crippled the Church in Halifax to such an extent that it will be a long time before it fully recovers.
Up to this time Halifax has given a large proportion of what is needed for Diocesan activities. the Mission Board especially, will have difficulty in meeting its obligations unless the parishes outside the city rally around and do more than ever before.
The Cathedral will need several thousands to restore it. St. Paul's, while not seriously damaged, yet will have to expend a good sum on repairs. St. George's has lost many of its parishioners and incurred heavy damage to its structure. Trinity will have to be rebuilt. St. Mark's has been demolished. St. Matthias has been seriously damaged, and all these three have had many parishioners swept away. Christ Church, Dartmouth, was seriously injured, and Emmanuel Church is a total loss.
The work of reconstruction and the provision for relief will interfere with the giving power of Halifax, and the parts of the Diocese which escaped the disaster must realize the responsibility thus thrown upon them. The work of the Church and the maintenance of its progress will depend for some time upon the generous loyality of the people throughout the Diocese.
I appeal to them, and I know my appeal will not be in vain, to stand by and give the aid that is needed. I do not ask for direct help to Halifax, but that the city should, until it has a chance to recover, be relieved largely of the obligations it has hitherto always most cheerfully met.
Many problems are now presented to us and many more must be solved before we are restored to a normal condition. The readjustment of parishes may have to be considered and the location of churches to be erected will also give some food for thought.
