CHRONICLE BUILDING
HALIFAX, N. S.
January 10th 1918.
Sir:
On December 6th, the day of the explosion I was ordered to proceed to Richmond with as many men possible, and to report to what authority there or to act on my own.
I reported with 23 men to Lieut-Col. Gillon who put us to work on the North Ordnance Magazine to clear away all of the wood work at the entrance of the magazine. After that I proceeded ("to" is crossed out) North with the men, where we helped to bring out the dead from the ruins, numbering around 50 bodies. I sent Srgt. Sprott with a clergyman to the City Hall to arrange about transferring the dead to the Morgue. In all worked from 10.30 a. m. to 3.30 p. m. The men then proceeded ("to" is crossed out) back to their unit.
December 7th I was ordered to proceed up to the north part of Gottingen St. to collect children that had been reported without shelter, buy found none. December 9-10, with 40 men took over patrol duty from the 66th, patrolling the various streets of the city. December 11th with 35 men reported to Lt. Col. Simmonds, as a searching party. Worked from 8 a. m. till 12.30. Then relived by Lt. Harrison
I have the honour to be Sir,
Your obedient servant,
E. Stuart Thompson, Lt
1st, C. G. A.
