Halifax Explosion.
December 6th, 1917.
December 6th and 7th
I was doing duty at Hugonins Battery, McNab's Island.
About 9.06 the morning of Dec. 6th heard first explosion. Knew it was not heavy gun, thought it was shell that had hit Ives' Point magazine. Rushed out in time to see big explosion--gigantic pillar of smoke and steam rising--varied colors. Saw fires breaking out over city. Next day went to town..Assisted acquaintances and relatives in moving furniture.
December 8th
Sent back to fort. Others came up whose relatives were in worse way than mine. Remained on duty till 16th.
December 15th
Ordered to town for one week for general duty at Citadel Hill. Spent five days visiting homes of N. C. O's and men of regiment living in areas north of Citadel in order to record damages done. Measured window frames for sashes and sashes for panes. Took requests for doors, beaver-board, etc. Noted urgencies of various cases and reported back to regimental headquarters.
December 22nd.
Sent back to outfort duty.
