McRae and Williams evidently took great pains in the matter of identification, making out lists of rings and watches for this purpose.
Sergeant Burpee, conscripted in California was in charge of the bags of effects. McRae did not know from whom he received orders, but found him opening the bags and making list of contents,. In this way Burpee became well acquainted with the contents, and on Christmas Eve disappeared with $200.00 cash, which he spent in a drinking bout. Burpee now in jail. Money not recovered. McRae of opinion that money and valuables were taken from the dead.
Arthur S. Barnstead was in general charge, obtaining materials for the office, food, etc. for the workers, burial parties from the military, etc. Statements in papers about excellent organization not quite accurate. Members threatened to resign if further statements of this kind were made.
Conduct of people in general "Fine and Brave,." Generally suspense was ended by the identification of a body, and relief was experienced. On being questioned, McRae was of opinion that it was not "stolidity". Some instances of breaking down and distressing scenes.
