convinced of her neighbor's honesty. Case of Alice McDonald, from "down the shore". Miss M. got "so much attached to her". She jumped from the third story of the Cotton Factory into a pile of scrap-iron. Both legs were broken, the right leg more damaged than the left. Miss M. found her lying on a mattress on the floor, between two beds, covered with a gray army blanket. A young man, returned soldier, in uniform, of the 40th battalion sat beside her on the floor all night. He said that Alice M. was "a good girl". Miss M. could take his word for it. She was lying on the mattress, rolling her head from side to side, and gnashing her teeth with pain. The doctor thought she was too far gone to do anything for her. Besides her broken bones there was a piece of glass in her temple three-quarters of an inch long. Miss M. could feel it, but the doctor did not. Miss M. was afraid to take it out, but finally got it removed. Described Alice M. as a dark type. dark hair and eyes. Not pretty, but a strong face. Too much character in her face. Tall, well-developed, sixteen years of age. looked older. Nice manner. Gave hypodermic on Friday evening. Had jumped from third story window because building was "all on fire". Her Aunt Annie jumped too and was not hurt Understood she recovered. In order to get the doctor to attend to this patient Miss M. gave him to understand that she was specially interested, as in a connection.
On the night of the 6th, when the orderly took Miss M. around, she saw how closely packed people were and would always
