Wagg, Len

Nova Scotia from the air : then and now / by Len Wagg.  Halifax, NS : Nimbus Publishing, 2019. 118 pages : illustrations (some colour) ; 23 cm.

Nova Scotia Archives Library - FC2312 W328 2019 - Open Shelf

In this brilliant follow-up to the bestselling Then & Now, award-winning photographer Len Wagg again takes readers back through time. Aerial landscapes shot in dazzling colour from Louisbourg to Church Point are contrasted with black-and-white photos from the Nova Scotia Archives collection. Readers will see high rises where there were once open fields; stark vistas filled in with residences and windmills. In some side-by-side pairings, the change is startling; in others, subtle. Nova Scotia from the Air is both a photo book and an historical study. Wagg flew over towns and landmarks from one end of the province to the other, recreating scenes from archival photos dating back to the 1930s. This remarkable collection of then-and-now images shows both the growth and the decline of this province by the sea. The 100 photographs evoke nostalgia and surprise.

Brannon, Rebecca

The Consequences of Loyalism : Essays in Honor of Robert M. Calhoon / edited by Rebecca Brannon and Joseph S. Moore.  Columbia, South Carolina : The University of South Carolina Press, 2019. xii, 333 pages ; 24 cm.

Nova Scotia Archives Library - use request slip - E277 C65 2019

Since the 1970s scholars have regarded Robert M. Calhoon as an invigorating and definitive force when it comes to the study of American Loyalism. His decades-long work redefined the Loyalists' role in the American Revolution from being portrayed as static characters opposing change to being seen eventually as reactionary actors adapting to a society in upheaval. Loyalists were central to the Revolution, and Calhoon and these authors argue that they were not so different in ideology from their Patriot neighbors — except occasionally when they were. In The Consequences of Loyalism, Rebecca Brannon and Joseph S. Moore seek to provide an understanding of Calhoon's foundational influence and the development continuing in the wake of his prolific career. Includes bibliographic references and index.

Stanley, Sir Henry Morton, 1841-

Through the dark continent : or, The sources of the Nile, around the great lakes of equatorial Africa, and down the Livingstone River to the Atlantic Ocean / by Henry M. Stanley.  Toronto, ON : J.B. Magurn, 1878. 2 volumes in 1. : portraits, illustrations, plates, maps ; 23 cm.

Nova Scotia Archives Library - use request slip - DT351 S83 1878

Perhaps best known as the intrepid adventurer who located the missing explorer David Livingstone in equatorial Africa in 1871, Henry Morton Stanley (1841-1904) played a major role in assembling the fragmented discoveries and uncertain geographical knowledge of central Africa into a coherent picture. He was the first European to explore the Congo River; assisted at the founding of the Congo Free State, and helped pave the way for the opening up of modern Africa. In this classic account of one of his most important expeditions, the venerable Victorian recounts the incredibly difficult and perilous journey during which he explored the great lakes of Central Africa, confirming their size and position, searched for the sources of the Nile, and traced the unknown Congo River from the depths of the continent to the sea.

Ash, Jim

My family in history : the Redmonds of St Margaret's Bay and the Ashes of Willoughby, Warwickshire / by Jim Ash.  Richmond, BC : Jim Ash, 2016. 297 pages ; 23 cm.

Nova Scotia Archives Library - CS89 A84 2016 - Open Shelf

The Ash family spent one hundred fifty years farming in Willoughby, Warwickshire in England, while the Redmond family fished and farmed in St Margaret's Bay, just south of Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. My wife Fran's family came from France to Quebec in the 17th century, and both our families had pioneers who experienced the Scottish Clearances. This book is about the history that they and their ancestors lived - from the prominent Redmond and Devereux families in County Wexford, Ireland, to the pioneers who lived in early Canadian history.
