In 1996 the Department of Housing and Consumer Affairs was dissolved and responsibility for housing transferred to Municipal Affairs, which was then renamed Housing and Municipal Affairs. The new department was responsible for administering the Housing Act, the Housing Development Corporation Act, the Assessment Act, the Municipal Act, the Municipal Affairs Act, the Regional Municipalities Act, the Towns Act and all other acts relating to municipal affairs. In 2000 the Departments of Business and Consumer Services and Housing and Municipal Affairs were superseded by Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations.
