Unnumbered envelope, Riots 1945 The Halifax Chronicle, Thursday, May 10, 1945, p.13, reported on the V-E Day Riots along Barrington Street - “Barrington Street from the Capitol Centre [present Maritime Centre at foot of Spring Garden Road] north to Jacob street [Scotia Square area] was sacked with a thoroughness equalled only by the Nazis in occupied Europe. Not a single plate glass window remained in a store...” Two fires, both of incendiary origin, broke out in Fader’s Drug Store, Hollis Street, and in People Credit Jewelers, Barrington Street. The Fader’s Drug Store’s fire started in the basement after rioters looted the store’s contents.
