Zellers store, s.e corner of Barrington and Sackville Streets after V-E Day Riot

Zellers, the Metropolitan Store, and Woolworth's were sacked. The mob discarded anything it didn't want. Two sailors emerged from a furniture store with a large mattress, threw it in the street, and then lay down and proceeded to hold a drinking party. Two others appeared with chrome easy chairs and followed the example of the two on the mattress. The Halifax Chronicle, Thursday, 10 May 1945, p. 13, report continued, "During all this time, the crash of shattering glass and the roar of the mod swelled over the city."
