Chipman Family Papers - Planters of Cornwallis

"The Isthmus of Nova Scotia"

Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres was Swiss but trained as a military engineer in England. Following the Seven Years War, he was ordered to make a survey of the Atlantic coast; he completed Nova Scotia and Sable Island between 1763 and 1774. Des Barres drew his own surveys and also used those by other surveyors for the British government. He was also responsible for their engraving and publication. The work was done for the British Admiralty and the Plantation Office so the charts show coastal settlements at a period of growth.
