Italianate or Italian Villa style buildings, 1840-1885, include the following characteristics:
- wood, brick construction
- 2 storey tall tower or campanile
- all have low pitched roofs, "L "shaped plans, gable roofs, square shaped hipped roofs, many include cupolas, all have deeply over hanging decorative eaves
- centred or off-centre doorway asymmetrical facade, often including porches on the ground floor and balconies on the second
