Aesop Moses was a former slave of Frederick Deveau. He was set free under the terms of Deveau's will when the latter died in 1814. Deveau also bequeathed to Moses 100 acres of land in Clements. Frederick Harris, writing in 1920, recalled boyhood memories of Aesop as an old man in the 1870s. Aesop suffered from severe rheumatism, but continued doing jobs for local farmers as long as he was able. (Charlotte Perkins, The Romance of Old Annapolis Royal, 1952.)
