African Nova Scotians in the Age of Slavery and Abolition

Church picnic, Weymouth Falls

Photograph shows the congregation of Weymouth Falls African Baptist church. Their rather formal dress is typical of the church picnics of their day.

Black settlement in the Weymouth area dates back to the 1780s. The Weymouth Falls African Baptist Church was one of seven churches which established the African United Baptist Association of Nova Scotia in 1854.
