Sydney, C.B. 31 Octr. 1837.
Sir,
I beg to acknowledge the receipt by
yesterday's mail, of your letter of 24 [?inst] enclosing
an affidavit copied from one presented by
Britain and the other trespassers on Crown
land in Rocky Bay, to which you request
a reply and explanation on the part of
the witnesses of the acts of trespass. I have
accordingly forwarded the copy of the aff[idavi]t. to
Arichat, and requested my deputy to make
the requisite inquiries.
I am sorry to say that the person
employed by me to seize the timber cut
by [Masters?] and others did not succeed
in effecting any seizure. He alleged that
the timber had been removed, and that
he was afraid to detain it, lest he
might not be able to prove that it
was the identical timber that had been
