African Nova Scotians in the Age of Slavery and Abolition

Commission to Silas Hardy of Granville as captain of a black militia company

The Nova Scotia government continually hoped to create black militia companies. However, this was generally opposed by local whites who disapproved of black people serving with the militia, even when the commissioned officers of the black companies were white.
