African Nova Scotians in the Age of Slavery and Abolition

''Charlie Symonds, a cooper of Upper Hammonds Plains''

Brookbank quotes Symonds as saying "a well made barrel is a beautiful thing." Coopering was the main occupation at Upper Hammonds Plains. According to Brookbank, the industry arose in response to the increasing demand for fish barrels from an expanding fishing industry.
