In the foreground there is a Mi'kmaq canoe with what appears to be a family of two adults and two small children, making their way past larger vessels. Engraved by Wells for the Naval Chronicle, this image was published 29 February 1804 by J. Gold, Shoe Lane, London. "The annexed plate exhibits a view of the Commissioner's House in the Naval Yard, Halifax. It was built during the peace before the last, while the present Deputy-Comptroller of the Navy was at the head of the Halifax Yard. The following description accompanied the drawing from which the engraving has been made, and which was transmitted by our old friend and correspondent, Halfpay."
