The Morning Chronicle reported 19 May 1886 p.3: "Arrival of a warship. HMS Emerald, Commander Richard H. Hamond, arrived in port yesterday from Bermuda, being the first man-of-war to arrive here this season. She carries 12 guns and has a crew of 222 men. This is the first time the Emerald has been on this station, having only arrived at Bermuda a short time ago from Portsmouth. She will remain for a week or so when she will proceed to Newfoundland on fishery protection service."
