An armoured-plated steamship, the Royal Alfred was the flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir George Rodney Mundy, 1867-1869, Admiral George Grenville Wellesley, 1869-1870, and of Vice-Admiral Edward G. Fanshawe, 1870-1873.
