Spoils of War: Privateering in Nova Scotia

Proclamation by Sir John Wentworth

Spain's 1796 entry into the war as an ally of France had a mixed impact on Nova Scotia. It increased the risk of trading into the Caribbean but at the same time multiplied opportunities for engaging in privateering, since a lot of Spanish merchant shipping now could be seized.
