St Anns [Nictaux] July 22nd 1861
My dear Sir,
In your absence from the Province I
have [handled?] the Attorney General with County
matters which more properly belonged to your department.
You will understand from the enclosed letter
that the [expelling?] of a number of families (our [?political]
friends) from the Indian Land at [Middle?] River will be
considered a matter of great hardship by the people and
their numerous friends for the [better?] consideration of this
Subject. I would beg [to refer?] you to the [Journals] of 1860
Appendi[x OR ng?] 392 - You will then observe that Mr Fairbanks
himself considers the expelling of those people "a matter of great
hardship" Here we have a number of families who are near
their friends and relatives and you can scarcely imagine the
feeling of Sympathy that will be raised on their behalf
and such things will naturally operate against the [fact?]
It is more than doubtful if I will even seek public force on
my behalf but there are [those?] who would like to [ruin OR win?]
[illegible] this 12th of May and for their Sakes I would [wish?] the field
to be left as [smooth?] as possible - At [?Middle] River there is
an Indian Reserve of 4504 acres - and the number of Indian families
who claim this land is only 26 this would make 170 acres [illegible]
to each family but while [?their] land is there the Indians are found
Scattered all over the Island and I may Safely say that not
more than [twelve?] families ever live there at one time
Therefore you [would?] send my poor friends [away?] to be
