A History of Mining Activity in Nova Scotia, 1720-1992

Macdonnell reported in detail to the Provincial Secretary on the progress made settling the strike by the miners at Sydney Mines and on the proceedings since he arrived at Sydney, 15 May. He met with Mr. Brown, Manager for the General Mining Association, and demanded the miners give up possession of their company-owned houses. If the troops had not been sent, the strike would have persisted and violence erupted. "There can be no doubt but the prompt measures taken by the Government to put down the strike in question, the first attempt of the kind ever made in the Province, will have taken the salutory effect of preventing for the future any such movement among persons engaged in mining operations in any part of the Country, & this is more important and desirable owing to the rapid increase and development of mining interests throughout the Province."
