Miners were striking against the General Mining Association for better wages, "many of the late operatives are armed and threaten death to all, or any, who commence work for the agent ..." The Provincial government was asked to dispatch troops to the mines. This report was published in the Halifax Chronicle, 10 May 1864, p.2 col. 4 and later in the Novascotian, 16 May 1864, p.5 col.3.
