A History of Mining Activity in Nova Scotia, 1720-1992

A stamp mill is the building (or the machine) where ore is crushed. The Mail Star, 28 November 1953, published this image as "Only One Left — Through the years that a variety of mining operations flourished at Oldham in Halifax County, some 15 or more stamp mills were erected there. Today there is only one left, and this one of the Avon Gold Company has not been in use since the mines closed in February, 1943. The first gold was found in Oldham by Edward Horne of Elmsdale and Samuel Isenor in 1861."
