Men in the Mines

A History of Mining Activity in Nova Scotia, 1720-1992

Letter, Joseph Howe to Earl of Mulgrave, 7 July 1860

8 pages; as Provincial Secretary, Howe is reporting on his trip to the "Tangier Gold Diggings" with Professor How of King's College, 30 June 1860. He described the journey from Jeddore through the forest for about eighteen miles where they found about one hundred men, chiefly young men from the eastern shore of Halifax County but also from Colchester and Pictou counties. Howe gathered them together to explain the government's concern and intention to preserve order and establish the subdivision of land. Although small amounts of gold have been found, he has "no hesitation in reporting to your Excellency, that for all practical purposes the Tangier diggings are utterly useless & unless correct information is speedily circulated will be a delusion and snare to the industry of the Country."
