JOURNAL
Truro Relief gave Splendid Aid
Sister Township in Detailed Accounting of Its Stewardship Shows How Kind Hearted Citizens Aided Halifax.
----------------------------------------------
The following report will give some idea of the great work of relief done by the citizens of Truro, of which Halifax is so deeply appreciative. It shows in a striking manner the wholeheartedness of their assistance and how eager they were to ameliorate the sufferings of their fellow creatures. Above all it is easy to recognize the true spirit of Canadian patriotism which prompted their generous actions.
The detailed report of the Relief Committee follows:
Ladies and Gentlemen:
The time has arrived when a fairly full report should be made of the part we have taken in caring for those victims of the disaster which overtook Halifax on the morning of the 6th, of December last, who were transported form the stricken city to be cared for by us.
I have found some difficulty in making such a report as is necessary for this Committee that will adequately serve the Halifax Commission and the public, who have so freely contributed the funds, and other necessaries to enable us to discharge our duties in a way becoming a christian community in this day of great calamities and sore affliction. I trust, however, this report will meet with the approval of all interested.
Immediately on the flashing of the news of the disaster to Truro, our citizens ceased all work for themselves and devoted their entire attention and efforts to preparing food for Halifax and food an hospital accommodation here.
By the time the trains arrived with their full burden of sufferers, our Court House, the Academy and our Fire Company's spacious apartments were converted into complete models of Contingent Hospital Units.
