Journal Dec. 27. p.3
Therefore resolved that this Club appoint a deligation of five members to wait upon the members of the Federal Government who are to visit the City of Halifax to urge upon them
First: An investigation which will reveal and if necessary punish the persons who have permitted the said ships to enter our harbor as aforesaid,
Second: To not only take steps to assure the citizens of Halifax that sufficient safeguards have been established, but to adopt rigid regulations whereby there will not be the slightest chance of any such disaster ever again occurring;
Third: To secure full reparation for the property losses to those who have suffered by the disaster and to make financial provision for those who have become totally or partially dependent as aforesaid by reason of physical injury or through the loss of the bread-winner of the family.
Question of Insurance Losses
The resolution on insurance was moved by A.H. Minshull and seconded by R.V. Harris. It is as follows:
Whereas, doubts have arisen whether fire and plate glass insurance companies are legally liable for the payment of losses incurred in the recent disaster which befell Halifax and Dartmouth,
And whereas, many of the citizens of Halifax and Dartmouth are unable by reason of their misfortune to incur the expense of protracted litigation,
And whereas, in the event of full reparation not being made to the victims of the disaster by those responsible for it, irreparable loss will be suffered through the failure of the insurance companies to pay the said losses,
And whereas, also recognizing the fact that the said companies would be ready to pay the said losses if they considered themselves legally bound to do so:
