The Parts Played by the Halifax Cadets in Relief Work.
On the morning after the explosion, I received a request from Deputy-Mayor Colwell for the services of a number of Academy Cadets in uniform, for the purpose of rendering whatever assistance might be required by them to the Relief Committee. Mr. Colwell, who is Chairman of the Cadet Committee, has taken a very active interest in the work of the Halifax Cadet corps ever since his appointment to the School Board of the city, and rightly judged that they could be of value in relief work.
Next morning the cadets reported to me at the City Hall, and at once became busily engaged in useful work. Some were placed on duty at the hospitals, and helped to care for the injured and the dyingin those awful first days and nights. Soon requests for their services became so numerous, that a further call was made, and the number was greatly increased.
For the first few days the greater part of their work was directed from the City Hall. They were placed at the disposal of the heads of the various committees. One group was attached to the Medical Relief Committee, which was under the direction of Col. Weatherbe. Here a day and a night shift were required for answering Emergency Calls, and for carrying on the work of Medical Supply at different hospital stations. Sleeping quarters had to be arranged for them in close touch with the headquarters' office.
