It was at the Dock Yard that the people of the United States first manifested that prompt and efficient aid, and that brotherly sympathy which will ever endear them to the City of Halifax and to the Canadian people. The American hospital ship Old Colony was lying alongside and within fifteen minutes of the explosion had two working parties with surgeons and all appliances, giving first aid to the injured and bringing comfort to the suffering. Bad cases were transferred to the sick bays of the Old Colony, where they received every attention, and later in the day patients were transferred from the overflowing hospitals in Halifax to the care of this generous ship.
