HALIFAX DISASTER RECORD OFFICE MG 1 VOL 2124
CHRONICLE BUILDING number 315 c
HALIFAX, N.S.
Memorandum.
Secretary was present at Overseas Club Luncheon, at the 'Tally-ho', Wednesday January 2nd, 1918. Dr. Ladd, in charge of the American unit at St. Mary's College Hospital, speaker of the day. Dr. Ladd is a very tall, distinguished looking man. Iron-grey hair; clean-shaven; very dark eyes, dark-brown or black under over shadowing brow; eyes at times dreaming, but at other times the impression of close observation; face altogether giving impression of great sympathy. Voice very sympathetic, but with comparatively little modulation, speaking on not more than three or four notes, Muscles about chin, cheek and throat visibly tightened when speaking of touching incidents. In one case his voice became husky, but was immediately controlled. Held closely to the sides of the chair behind which he was standing while speaking, thumbs in behind the side-post fingers closely together and not crooked in front of it. Secretary got the impression that the thumbs were very closely pressed against the posts for the purpose of controlling nervousness. Fingers moved almost constantly back and forth, still close together, (side-wise, not up and down). Not a fluent speaker, sentences put together very jerkily as a rule, but in spite of this a very impressive speaker.
"Dr. Ladd in charge of Boston Medical Party now at St. Mary's Hospital, Gives Overseas Club His Impressions of the Great Disaster and Discusses Relief Work Here" - A.MacMechan's memo regarding said meeting, description of Dr. Ladd, psychology.
