Explosion: Effects upon Merchants Bank of Canada
At the time of the explosion all the members of our staff were in the building and although all of our plate glass, seven large windows, was shattered no one was hurt beyond minor cuts.
Having ascertained the condition of affairs in the business part of the city it was immediately decided that the Banks should be closed for the remainder of the day. Banking was resumed however, though to a limited extent, on Friday Dec. 7th.
The freakish action of the explosion was noticeable in a peculiar occurrence at the residence of the writer. In our smoke room the door and windows were perfectly intact and apparently not a picture or other ornament had been moved. On the mantel piece however, where there were probably a dozen photo frames and a glass clock, the glass of one frame, and one only, was cracked in several directions though the frame itself had apparently been unmoved.
