On December 6th, about noon, I reported to Major Willis at Headquarters, and was ordered to proceed to Richmond, taking command of all soldiers met on the way. About 50 were thus obtained. At North St., I detailed Lieut. Finn with about 20 men to proceed up Gottingen St., where they assisted in the removal of children from St. Joseph's School. He reported to me later on the water front. With the remainder, Lt. R. M. Fielding and I proceeded directly to the scene of the disaster and assisted in searching the ruins from the sugar refinery north, collecting and sending to the morgue about 50 bodies. About 5.30 p. m. I reported again to Headquarters, as it was almost impossible to continue the search without lanterns, and was detailed to get some oil for the tents on the Common, which I obtained and delivered about 10 p. m.
On December 7th, I reported to the Citadel, and in the afternoon, under Capt. Strachan, assisted in making the Army and Navy Club fit for shelter.
On December 8th, reported again to Citadel and returned to Fort Ogilvie.
