HALIFAX DISASTER RECORD OFFICE
CHRONICLE BUILDING
HALIFAX, N.S.
Surgeons name Andrews. Operating room nurse named Stevens. Mrs. McDougall was made Matron. Andrews and W. went out on Sunday to get materials from Farquhar Bros. to equip the operating room, which was the gymnasium. The first operation was booked for five p.m. Monday. Just before that time the lights went out. W. went to the General Electric Company and got a powerful electric torch. Commended Captain Barret, quarter-master, who equipped the building and got cots and bedding. Was amused to see Barrett take the contents of the building by rule of thumb, which was none the less effective. It was Roper who suggested building the incline into the gymnasium, along which patients could be moved. It was built outside in sections. Previously patients had been lowered down by roped [sic] and pulleys in something that looked like a coffin. A nervous proceeding.
Note Roper took careful measurements for incline.
2 January 1918. Letter, Boston, Mass. E.A. Cadman to Dr. W. W. Woodbury, regarding work done at the Y.M.C.A. Hospital, credit for effort.
