HALIFAX DISASTER RECORD OFFICE
CHRONICLE BUILDING
HALIFAX, N. S.

At 9 p. m. I was at my desk when there was a knock at the door, and in came two naval officers; Captain Moses, a little Jew, more like our type of sailor, of the "VON STEUBEN" , and Captain Symmington, of the "TACOMA", a typical Yank. "Is there anything we can do?""Can you give me any men to patrol the streets?" "Any number." "Can you give me 250?" "Yes." Before I could realize it they had 250 men ashore, patrolled the streets that night, and let our men get a much-needed rest and sleep.
Note Bob McIlreith grasped the situation and did rise to the occasion The Controllers were running in and out. On the Sunday General Benson and T. waited on the Relief Committee at the City Club and gave to each of the Committee an expert officer to co-operate with them. Henceforth anything that the Military could do was done through the representations of this officer.
