HALIFAX DISASTER RECORD OFFICE
Chronicle Building
Halifax, N.S.

This worked out into a first-class order system by which clothing was delivered in motors. Thy system at the present time Mr. S. characterized as "splendid". At first it was impossible to check the receipt or issue of clothing. It was possible to check the new material that was sent in. Some of the clothing sent in from Nova Scotia towns was in a bad condition--motheaten stockings, soleless shoes, clothing not clean. Ladies refused to work with the goods. Quantities went to the Lyceum and dumped there. All that was sent from the United States was very good, even when the clothing was not new, but second-hand, it was absolutely clean, washed, pressed and marked, holes darned etc. The baby outfits were perfect. They had thought of everything. The men's outfits had bags containing buttons, threads, etc.. The boots and shoes from R. Taylor and from Goodwin's Montreal were excellent. So was the clothing left by Eaton's, the remainder of which was distributed by the Green Lantern after Eaton's employees returned to Toronto.
NOTE - There were about thirty ladies and twelve men working constantly at the Green Lantern for two weeks. School teachers of Halifax were left in charge. Mrs. Blois and Mrs. Webster of Boston had a clothing depot in the Court House. There were "beautiful goods there". Instanced a velour coat (Filene). Must have been worth $75 only slightly worn--also a dog-skin coat, which was given to a janitor's wife.

Sales agent, Acadian Sugar Refinery Company, home, "Waverley House".
