PERSONAL NARRATIVE
Mrs. James Slayter,
29 South Street

On December 6th Mrs. S. and daughter Katherine carried injured to hospitals in their motor. Worked all day at this. On the 7th, "fixed up" her own house. Went to the Green Lantern in the evening of December 8. Mrs. Dennis asked her to work on the girl's clothing. She sorted clothing, put it on counter where it could be easily got at and helped to distribute it. She worked at this for nine days. Sometimes she worked in the evenings. She does her own house-work, and could not neglect it as she had a guest. Worked at the Green lantern all the time that she was not getting meals and doing what was absolutely necessary at home, Conditions at the Green Lantern very bad. It was very cold and when it stormed they could hardly avoid getting wet. "Some boxes of clothing sent were awful, and some was beautiful." One of the places in the U.S., Mrs. S could not remember just where, sent little surprises in the pockets of the children's clothes -- a bottle of perfume, a tiny box of talcum powder, a toy -- something of the sort in every outfit. The workers were all very nice. The only unpleasant person was an intoxicated man who was working in the store-room. He was so rude that the women had to stop going in for goods and sent a man when they wanted anything. At. John sent a splendid box. The baby outfits from the United States were perfect. Every little thing was thought of.
One stormy night Mr. Hart of the Green Lantern sent over a huge box of sandwiches and 'they had a picnic.'.
