Halifax, N.S.
of his house. "Black with people".
Saunders house built by himself. Twenty-one years old. Carefully built. Stringers of roof split on one side towards the explosion and stringers of cellar split on the other. He was satisfied that the house had ben violently pushed in the one direction and drive back by the other.
Worked on the Supply Committee under A. Hanfield Whitman and Gregor Mitchell at the City Club, giving orders for glass. A Relief Station was opened at the corner of North St. and Agricola. At first, they gave out food, et. to all who asked. This station began the first register system. Afterwards teams were sent out with food. System was improved by Mr. C. R. Choat -- specialty broker, 51 Upper Water St. Excellent work done by the men from St John This Relief Station had no complaints.
Mr. Saunders stated that the windows were broken in the school-house at Gay's River, 35 miles away, by the force of the explosion. He was also informed by a painter from Charlottetown that he (the painter) and the Manager of the Bank of Nova Scotia in Charlottetown were discussing painting the interior of the Bank, when the door slammed in an inexplicable manner. Note Miss Kathleen Day, teaching school at Tatamagouche reported a similar occurrence in her school, to the Director. The windows of the school rattled violently as if from a strong wind. The door was open. Miss Day expected a repetition, which did not come. Mr. Saunders had also to attend to his duties as Secretary of the Board of Trade. B. of T. found it necessary to inform outsiders that Halifax merchants were still in a state to make purchases, that the wharves were able to accomodate shipping, etc..
