HALIFAX, N. S.

Was also impressed by action of Engineer Lieut. Stevens, H. M. C. S. Niobe. Stevens volunteered to go on board the "Moulton", ammunition ship reported on fire, open Kingston valves and sink her. "No nice job, going down into the guts of a burning ammunition ship". Boatswain of the'Niobe' with boats crew went to render assistance to "Mont Blanc" . In these cases the first boat is a sort of advance guard, and goes to discover what kind of assistance is needed. Boatswain and crew were lost. 'Niobe' not organized as a ship. Really a naval barracks of one thousand men. Newcombe had heard many "bumps" but no "bump" as big as this.
