"Could feel the pain of the injured, in the air." Went south to his residence in Fenwick Street. Saw funny things. Old people, sick people taken out along Queen St. After seeing how things were at his house, he proceed south as far as Bland St. returned to his house about noon, after being informed that danger was over. Had lunch and a cup of tea. returned to the Bank and made repairs till five o'clock.
December 7th. went to the North-End on sleigh of customer to see the North-End. Unable to proceed on account of blizzard. Was asked to attend meeting of the Finance Committee. Meeting was held in the Bank of Nova Scotia. Premier Borden was present. Mr Ralph Bell did Secretarial work. G. S. Campbell, A. K. McLean and H. Flemming (?) also present. Mr. D. M. drafted the first statement of the damage caused by the explosion which went to the press.
December 8th. There was an important meeting in the evening of the Board of Trade. Commander Guest of the British Embassy at Washington was present. Sent him to Admiral Chambers' on a sleigh after the meeting. The Naval Authorities were desirous of learning when the various damaged vessels could be repaired at the Graving-Dock.
When the Re-habilitation Committee was formed, D. M. was asked to take the head of it, about the end of the second week. Was pressed to take it, took it on certain conditions. (see statement by Mrs. M. B. Sexton). The first week "the most awful week I ever put in in my life". "Literally thousands of people coming every day, standing in the 'bread-line' etc., out in the blistering cold." The matter of registration was not approached in a large enough way. At the end of the week he felt he must have more expert assistance--clerks
