and drugs, although clothing was sent as well. Equipment of all kinds was demanded of him for the local hospitals and he had to supply it. He ran a tremendous account with the National Drug Company and practically bought out the Surgical Supplies co. Maguire received, checked over and kept account of all that came in. He had thirty-two N. C. O's and men to handle the stuff. Transportation was extremely difficult. Motor-trucks were at a premium, hence the rapid loading and un-loading were absolutely necessary. He handled the entire tonnage of the Old Colony, Calvin Austin and Northland. Sir John Eaton sent an entire baggage car full of absolutely necessary stuff, which other people had forgotten, such as quantities of eusol, used for making Dakin's antiseptic solution, and several pounds of resorcin. Three hundred and twenty-five cases of clothing were sent by the Vancouver Red Cross and carried free by the Dominion Express Company. These were "dumped on us," had to be opened, clothing sorted out into various piles and distributed among the various shelters, etc. Maguire's men worked literally night and day. They were drafts from the west and had no local interests. Maguire's duty was to inspect them and he found working at midnight.
