HALIFAX, N.S.
Director attended meeting in the Legislative Council Chamber, Province Building, Sat. Dec. 29th.
General Mewburn and Hon. A. K. MacLean were there at first. Colonel Ballantyne was rather late in coming. Noticed Bishop Worrell, D. Macgillivray, Mayor Martin, Controller Murphy, Charles Bell, J. T. Wilson, John McKeen, G. E. Faulkner. All three ministers are sahibs of the mastiff or St. Barnard type baited by fox terriers. On the par of the city there was an evident tendency to prejudge the case. Also a rather blind anger and narrowness. Ballantyne defended the management of the port with great ability and apparent honesty. Meeting lasted not quite an hour. "They will try to put the blame on the pilots." Speaking all around was of a high character. Was particularly impressed with the quiet earnestness of Controller Murphy, a little pale man with black hair, rather too long.
