disposed of. Offers came at once from the Strand Theatre and St. Mary’s Hall, [Knights of Columbus Bldg., St. Paul’s Hall, Academy of Music] throwing these buildings open to the refugees. Citizens came in large numbers “flocking” to give us places to put people. One said “We’ll take two families or two women or husband and wife.” By eight o’clock, a canteen was running in the Treasurer’s office. The supplies came from [Food Committee] John Tobin and Colwell’s [Delicatesse] Delicatessen. They fed their teamsters and chauffeurs. The cars were running all night. Gillis was at work “three solid days and nights”.
