About an hour after the explosion, Miss Giffin's father was watching a house that had fallen in a heap and was burning. Other people were there, standing about. Suddenly a cyclone took the burning mass of ruins up in the air "almost out of sight", and then swirled it over toward Fort Needham, where it fell to the earth. The people about stepped back and drew others back to prevent them from being drawn up by the suction of air.
Note
Although Miss Giffin was squarely in front of the window and very close to it, she was not cut at all--not even scratched. She was very much bruised about the body--says her flesh is sore still (April 30th, 1918.)--and her side must have been hurt in some way, as she has pain in it.
