He was picked up by a motor-car. He intended to visit three or four families of his parishioners. Found all their homes destroyed. One was "a pile of bricks and [xx] a bath-tub". William J. Beuree, 58 Union St. called to him "Come here, your Reverence." Showed him his wife and three children all dead and covered with burlap bags. The names of the families were,, Williams, Brodie, Ferris. Mrs. [xxxxx] Brodie had asked her sister to let the children come out and see the beautiful sight of the burning ship. Mrs. J. P. Brodie was thrown three hundred feet (the distance was afterwards measured). She had on an ulster at the time. It was all torn away except the arms. [x] Her other clothing was torn from her body, but she was not badly injured. The other sister Mrs. Ferris is in a worse condition and is suffering from some dislocation of the motor nerves. Present address of Mrs. Brodie, 575 Robie St. where she is staying with her father. One of his parishioners, Peckham, A. H., boards 26 Brunswick St. time-keeper in the Round-House, told him to go south. He went as far as his married daughter's house, 94 Edward St. Peckham was [xx] on his way to the Round-House when the explosion occurred. The limbs of a soldier fell round him. Mr. C. saw the injured being brought into Camp-Hill Hospital,,. Saw officers in motor-cars tellingg people that there was no danger. On his way to Richmond went to the Deaf and Dumb Institution to see Mr. Fearon "awful desolation". There were fires on both sides of him along Union St. He had to pick his way over wires and debris. As he looked over the hill-side, he had the impression of being in a strange country--that he had never been there before. It was "terribly unfamiliar". You saw nothing to remind you that you were in Richmond". Small parties of men were working here and there over the slope and larger numbers near the waterside.
