HALIFAX DISASTER RECORD OFFICE
Chronicle Building
Halifax, N.S.

Packets (first aid) used liberally, as far as they would go. Then first-aid. Red Cross man and Williams, a sailor, very good—helped in calming the children. Mary Armitage streaming blood (thought breast cut: all from head not the breast). [x] Rafters came down in other building—desks covered six feet deep with rafters etc. Boys crawled out from underneath, not many hurt. Most of the girls not in the building at the time. Lined up before building.
Two High School girls killed at their homes. Mary Armitage had to carry the children down-stairs. They were “balky” frightened. Brunt went through buildings three times in ten minutes to see that no child was left. Even looked into closets. Remained about building till 4 p.m. Saved hot-water heating: ran water off. Thompson’s drug-store burned, by upset stoves. Magazines, pads and stationery were there.
Vickery and Brunt saved manual-training tools, saved domestic science material.
$15,000.00 damage to B.H.S. due to weather. (Brunt’s estimate.) Heating system intact.
