Just before she was knocked down, it looked as if the center of the cloud had burst into fire. She thought it was a German bomb. Others thought it an earthquake for they knew nothing about it till they heard the distant rumble grow louder and louder until the terrific crash.
My aunt, Mrs. E.R. Wright, who was living at what used to be 111 Campbell Road, practically had her clothes disintegrated. Also, her son, Robert Wright, had a peculiar experience, he was thrown such a distance. The true details can be learned from him, as he is living with his sister, Mrs. Douglas Tyre, Lorne Terrace, Halifax.
There was one case which amused us a little. A man who was very badly cut about the head was only concerned about a hernia he had had for thirty years, which had not suffered from the shock at all.
I do not suppose you want much fault finding, but I would like to have stress laid upon the education of First Aid. It seemed a pity after all these people had suffered to have anything done to add to their misery. While a great deal of the work was efficient, there was a large portion which could be commented on, not only from the untrained but I suppose, doctors. So many of the wounds were sewed up without being cleaned or even the large pieces of glass removed, several cases of which I assisted to dress, it seemed incredible a doctor or any one could possibly sew up the wound without feeling or even seeing the large pieces of glass, let alone the dirt, cinders, and plaster. There were also many cases of burns where dry absorbent cotton had been applied. I specially remember a small boy, whose face was very badly burned. Dry cotton was the dressing first used. The doctor and I worked off and on for hours
