This book tells the story of Dr. Clement Cortenay Ligoure, a Trinidadian who obtained his medical degrees from Queens University at Kingston, Ontario and went on to become the first Black physician to practice in Nova Scotia. During the chaotic weeks following the 1917 explosion in Halifax Harbour, Dr. Ligoure treated hundreds of patients without payment. His unrelenting diligence and selfless actions saved many lives. From 1916 to 1917, he also served as an editor and publisher of The Atlantic Advocate, the first newspaper in Canada devoted to the interests of Black people in Halifax and throughout the province. Though a tireless recruiter and fundraiser for the No. 2 Construction Battalion during the First World War, the military denied Dr. Ligoure the commission of Medical Officer for his unit. After The Atlantic Advocate ceased publication, he worked on behalf of Marcus Garvey's Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL) as an ardent spokesman. - Joel Zemel.
