The book contains profiles of 71 First World War soldiers from Guysborough County, Nova Scotia, all of whom died while in uniform, the majority in military combat. The stories in volume I are arranged chronologically by date of death and covering the years 1915 to 1917 inclusive while volume II focuses in on 1918-1937. The profiles provide a glimpse into the events of the war through the soldiers' stories, and details what life was like for returning soldiers. While the majority served with Nova Scotian battalions, some served with units from New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario and Western Canada, also providing a glimpse into the roles of various military battalions and some non-combat units in the war's events.
