Disaster Citizenship : survivors, solidarity, and power in the Progressive Era / Jacob A.C. Remes. Urbana : University of Illinois Press, 2016. xi, 283 pages : illustrations, maps, plans, 25 cm.
Nova Scotia Archives Library - use request slip - HV555 U6 R46 2016
A century ago, governments buoyed by Progressive Era-beliefs began to assume greater responsibility for protecting and rescuing citizens. Yet the aftermath of two disasters in the United States-Canada borderlands--the Salem Fire of 1914 and the Halifax Explosion of 1917--saw working class survivors instead turn to friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members for succor and aid. Both official and unofficial responses, meanwhile, showed how the United States and Canada were linked by experts, workers, and money. In Disaster Citizenship, Jacob A.C. Remes draws on histories of the Salem and Halifax events to explore the institutions--both formal and informal--that ordinary people relied upon in times of crisis. He explores patterns and traditions of self-help, informal order, and solidarity and details how people adapted these traditions when necessary. Yet, as he shows, these methods--though often quick and effective--remained illegible to reformers. Indeed, soldiers, social workers, and reformers wielding extraordinary emergency powers challenged these grassroots practices to impose progressive 'solutions' on what they wrongly imagined to be a fractured social landscape. Innovative and engaging, Disaster Citizenship excavates the forgotten networks of solidarity and obligation in an earlier time while simultaneously suggesting new frameworks in the emerging field of critical disaster studies. his book recounts the rich history of Halifax's Public Gardens from their founding by the Nova Scotia Horticultural Society in 1833 to their extensive restoration after being devastated by Hurricane Juan in 2003. Peter Twohig details the gradual addition of elements such as their memorial fountains, distinctive stone bridges, ponds and bandstand. Full-colour visuals drawn from many archival sources reveal the wide range of the Gardens' natural and architectural splendour. Robert Pace and Robert Salah describe the restoration work undertaken after storm damage, which has made the Public Gardens an even more appealing destination for Haligonians and visitors to the city. Nova Scotia Archives Library - use request slip - HV1010 H352 H35 2019
Between 1857 and 1970, thousands of children came to live at the Halifax Protestant Orphan's Home. Some were children whose parents simply didn't have the means to care for them any longer; others were orphans who had nowhere else to go. Many faced abuse, poverty, and neglect before, during, and after their time in the facility. All were vulnerable young wards, left in the trusted care of an institution that, in countless cases, would ultimately betray them. In Wounded Hearts: Memories of the Halifax Protestant Orphans' Home veteran journalist Lois Legge digs deep into the lived experiences of the children who passed through those doors, painting an indelible picture of innocence lost. This in-depth narrative introduces readers to the strength and sorrow of the home's survivors, in advance of the fiftieth anniversary of Veith House (2020), an inclusive community centre and the former site of the orphanage. Includes bibliographical references.
